Our Heritage

Over two centuries of spiritual legacy in the heart of Colombo

A Sacred Legacy Since 1813

Nestled within the historic Ramlal Maharajah Dharma Chatram, Sri Sivaraja Vinayagar Swamy Kovil stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the Hindu community in Colombo. For over 200 years, this sacred kovil has served as a spiritual sanctuary for countless devotees.

Built during the British colonial period, the kovil has witnessed the transformation of Colombo from a colonial port city to a modern metropolis, while maintaining its sacred traditions and architectural heritage.

The kovil is dedicated to Lord Vinayagar (Ganesha), the remover of obstacles and the deity of new beginnings. Devotees from across Sri Lanka and the diaspora visit to seek blessings, especially during auspicious occasions.

The Ramlal Maharajah Dharma Chatram

The kovil is situated within the Ramlal Maharajah Dharma Chatram, a charitable rest house built in 1813 to provide shelter and spiritual services to pilgrims and travelers. The chatram represents the philanthropic spirit of the early Hindu community in colonial Ceylon.

A "Dharma Chatram" (also known as Choultry) traditionally served as a place of rest for weary travelers, offering food, water, and a place to worship. The Sri Sivaraja Vinayagar Swamy Kovil became the spiritual heart of this charitable institution.

Today, the chatram and kovil together form an important heritage site, representing the rich cultural tapestry of Colombo's Kotahena area and the generosity of our ancestors.
